Sod Care

Whether you’re installing a new lawn or fixing a deteriorating one, our sod care page gives you the information you need to maintain your new sod. Installing a new lawn can instantly enhance the look of your home. As well as allows you to enjoy the benefits of a green, healthy lawn.

How long can I let the sod sit on the pallet from when its delivered?

Sod must be installed by end of day of delivery in order to keep the warranty. During cooler times of the year you can typically wait a little longer but we suggest not to risk it. Sod cooks in the summer heat and will rot the rolls. If you are unable to install the sod day of, un stack the sod to allow the rolls to breathe. This is not a guaranteed way to save your sod but it seems to work well. Do not water your sod while it’s on the pallet. The heat and moisture rots it, not it being dry.

How soon should I water my newly installed sod?

Sod needs to be watered within 30 minutes of instal in order to prevent root shock. This will turn the sod yellow. It does not kill it but will just take time to become green again. If you have a larger project, lay the sod in sprinkler zones and as you finish one section, turn the sprinklers on and work not he next section. This will keep your sod happy

How much water should I apply to my sod?

This will very a lot with which season you install in. Rule of thumb is you want your sod to be moist at all times for the first 3-4 weeks but not soggy. Anywhere from 2 cycles in the cooler months unto 4 cycles per day during peak summer months is typical. Time per zone is typically between 12-20 minutes but each yard is different (Numbers may very outside of these). Different sprinklers, soil types, water pressure, etc, can change how many minutes you need to water on each zone. If sod turns yellow, this means it needs more water. If it turns a dark color and starts to stink, that is too much water.

What fertilizer should I use?

We recommend using 2 types of fertilizer for spring/fall and summer months. Triple 16 starter fertilizer for spring/fall months and 25-3-3 blend for summer months. These products are best found at your local home and garden centers. Sod does come prefertilized. No need to apply when you first install
